About the Project

Arizona Before the Change

Arizona is home to some of the most breathtaking and extreme landscapes in the American Southwest — from vast desert basins and towering canyon systems to remote wilderness areas few people ever have the opportunity to experience firsthand.

But these landscapes are changing.

Rising temperatures, prolonged drought, shifting ecosystems, wildfire impacts, and environmental stress are already reshaping parts of Arizona in visible ways. Some changes happen slowly over decades. Others are unfolding faster than many people realize.

Arizona Before the Change is an ongoing environmental photography and storytelling project dedicated to documenting these landscapes through powerful visual imagery, education, and respectful exploration.

The mission of the project is simple:

  • Preserve visual records of Arizona’s landscapes and wildlife

  • Increase awareness of environmental change across the Southwest

  • Inspire appreciation, stewardship, and connection to the natural world

  • Create imagery that future generations can look back on and understand what these places once looked like

This project focuses on photographing remote and rarely seen environments throughout Arizona while emphasizing ethical documentation, environmental respect, and collaboration with land stewards and Native communities where permitted.

The goal is not fear or sensationalism.
The goal is connection.

Connection to the land.
Connection to the beauty and fragility of the Southwest.
Connection to the responsibility we all share in preserving it.

Every photograph captured becomes part of a growing visual archive of Arizona’s landscapes, wildlife, and environmental story.
